With \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCoy Koi\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, I wanted to take the opposite approach.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI built the pond from deep saturated tones with midnight blue passages, allowing the koi to appear at different depths beneath the surface. Against that darkness, the fish and lily pads emerge almost like jewels.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSome of the koi seem content to drift peacefully beneath the water.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOthers make themselves a little harder to ignore.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat contrast between stillness and movement became one of my favorite parts of the painting—the feeling that each fish has its own little personality moving through the pond.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAbout the Original Artwork\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe original \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCoy Koi\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was painted in transparent watercolor with layers of mineral and semi-precious gemstone pigments.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne of the experiments in this painting involved combining colors that watercolor painters are often taught to approach very carefully.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA deeply staining pyrrol orange was established first in portions of the koi. Once completely dry, selected areas were glazed with a granular gemstone blue.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOrange and blue sit opposite one another on the color wheel, so layering them can easily collapse into muddy neutrals. In this painting, however, the very different characteristics of the pigments allowed both colors to remain visually present while layered.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe effect can be seen where the blue ripples in the water appear passing over the warm orange of the fish beneath it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the original painting, mineral and gemstone pigments also catch changing light with subtle shimmer.
