Honu Island Waters celebrates the beauty and grace of the Hawaiian green sea turtle, or honu, gliding effortlessly through the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific. With its richly detailed shell, colorful flippers, and surrounding patterns inspired by Pacific Island art, this painting brings together the natural beauty of marine life and the flowing rhythms of the ocean.

I've always been fascinated by sea turtles. There is something magical about watching them move through the water with such ease and quiet confidence. They seem completely at home in the currents, carrying their own peaceful little world wherever they go.

In this painting, I wanted to combine the realistic beauty of the honu's intricate shell with the playful energy of bold, decorative patterns. The swirling shapes and layers of turquoise, aqua, and blue create a feeling of movement, as though the turtle is swimming through an endless dance of island waters.

The original painting is part of my Silver Lining Series, where transparent watercolor is paired with delicate metallic silver linework. The shimmering details add another dimension of light and movement, echoing the way sunlight dances across the ocean's surface.

My background as a tattoo artist has greatly influenced this series, especially my love of flowing lines, intricate patterns, and the beautiful balance between bold design and delicate detail. In Honu Island Waters, I brought that influence into the Pacific Island-inspired patterns surrounding the turtle, blending the expressive linework of tattoo art with the softness and fluidity of watercolor. The result brings together two artistic worlds I love, united by my lifelong fascination with water.

In Hawaiʻi, honu are cherished symbols of wisdom, endurance, protection, and harmony with nature. To me, they are also beautiful reminders to move through life with grace, trust the currents, and enjoy the journey.
