Mano Niho

Open Edition Fine Art Print from an Original Watercolor by Christie Marie Elder

Beneath the turquoise waters of Hawaiʻi, a silent guardian moves through the shallows. Powerful, mysterious, and beautifully at home in the ocean, the shark reminds us that there is so much more to the sea than what we see from above.

In Mano Niho, a tiger shark glides quietly beneath luminous tropical waters, where gentle waves wash over the rugged, rocky shoreline. Transparent layers of gemstone watercolor reveal the shifting blues, aquamarines, and emerald greens of the ocean, capturing the beautiful perspective of looking down through the moving water into the mysterious world below.

Bold geometric patterns, inspired by the triangular forms of shark teeth, move across the composition. Their structured rhythm creates a striking contrast to the fluid, organic movement of the sea.

The Silent Guardian

Sharks have always inspired a special kind of awe. Powerful yet graceful, they move through the ocean with an extraordinary sense of belonging.

In Hawaiʻi, sharks also hold cultural significance, including ancestral connections in some Native Hawaiian traditions. That relationship between people, nature, and place is something I deeply respect.

With Mano Niho, I wanted to bring together the strength and symbolism of the shark with the beauty of its natural environment.

The contrast between the soft, flowing watercolor and the bold geometric patterns creates a balance between strength and serenity, movement and stillness.

A celebration of the ocean's wild spirit, its silent guardians, and the extraordinary world beneath the surface.

Light Beneath the Surface

The original Mano Niho was painted with mineral and semi-precious gemstone watercolor pigments, bringing another dimension of luminosity to the ocean's shifting colors.

As light moves across the original painting, these beautiful pigments reveal subtle variations of shimmer and depth, adding to the feeling of looking down through living, moving water.

The fine art reproduction captures the rich blues, turquoise hues, intricate details, and tonal beauty of the original watercolor. However, the physical reflective qualities of the gemstone pigments are unique to the original artwork and are not recreated in the print.

FINE ART PRINT DETAILS

Fine Art Paper Print

Printed on heavyweight cold press fine art paper chosen for its subtle texture and its ability to beautifully reproduce the character of watercolor.

The textured surface complements the transparent watercolor layers, delicate movement of the water, and rich variations of turquoise, deep blue, and emerald green found throughout Mano Niho.

METAL PRINT

The luminous turquoise waters, dramatic contrast of the geometric patterns, and rich underwater colors make Mano Nihoespecially striking on metal.

The image is reproduced on aluminum for vibrant color, crisp detail, and a clean contemporary presentation. The contrast between the deep midnight blues and bright aquamarine water gives the artwork wonderful visual presence.

Each metal print includes an inset frame on the back with hanging wire and arrives ready to hang. The recessed mounting system allows the artwork to float slightly away from the wall for a polished contemporary presentation.

Made to order.

OPEN EDITION FINE ART PRINT

This is an open-edition fine art reproduction of an original artwork by Christie Marie Elder.

Open-edition prints are created without a fixed edition limit, making them an approachable way to collect and enjoy my artwork while still receiving a professionally produced fine art reproduction.

Each print is made to order using archival-quality materials and professional fine art printing methods.

COLD PRESS FINE ART PAPER

Printed on a beautiful Cold Press Textured Matte Fine Art Paper, chosen for its rich surface and its ability to complement the character of watercolor and painterly artwork.

The paper is a substantial 340 gsm, 100% cotton rag, acid-free fine art paper with a neutral-white, heavily textured matte surface. Its texture is reminiscent of traditional watercolor paper, allowing color, detail, and subtle variations in the artwork to reproduce beautifully.

Fine art paper prints are sold unframed and unmatted, allowing you to choose a presentation that works with your own space and style.

Because many of my paintings have their own unique proportions, I prefer to preserve the artwork's original composition rather than crop it simply to fit standard frame dimensions. A custom-cut mat is an easy way to fit the print into a larger standard frame while keeping the complete image visible.

METAL PRINT

Metal prints give the artwork a luminous, contemporary presentation with particularly rich color, crisp detail, and beautiful depth.

The image is reproduced onto a polymer-coated aluminum surface using dye-sublimation printing, a process in which the image becomes part of the coated surface rather than sitting on top of it.

The finished print is lightweight, durable, water-resistant, and scratch-resistant, with especially vibrant color and strong contrast.

Each metal print includes an inset frame on the back with hanging wire and arrives ready to hang. The recessed mounting system allows the artwork to sit slightly away from the wall, creating a clean, contemporary floating effect.

Metal is one of my favorite choices for artwork featuring water, tropical color, night skies, reflections, and luminous blues, because the medium can give those colors wonderful visual presence.

Please note: Metal printing does not recreate physical metallic or reflective pigments that may be present in an original painting unless specifically stated in the artwork description.

AVAILABLE SIZES

Each artwork is offered only in sizes that work well with its composition.

Rather than forcing every image into the same standard proportions, I preserve the artwork's intended shape whenever possible.

ABOUT COLOR & REPRODUCTION

I take care to reproduce the color and character of each original artwork as faithfully as possible.

Please keep in mind that every screen displays color somewhat differently, so the artwork you receive may vary slightly from what you see on your phone, tablet, or computer.

Because an original painting may contain texture, metallic pigments, gemstone watercolor, surface sheen, or other materials that interact physically with light, some qualities of an original simply cannot be duplicated in a reproduction.

When an artwork includes one of these special effects, I'll note it in the individual artwork description.

CARE

Fine Art Paper: Framing behind protective glazing is recommended. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, moisture, and handling of the printed surface.
