Manu o Kū, the graceful white fairy tern, has long held a special significance in Hawaiian culture. For generations, these beautiful seabirds helped guide Hawaiian voyagers across the vast Pacific. Their appearance over the open ocean was a reassuring sign that land was near.
I love the beautiful connection between this bird and the Hawaiian word manaʻolana, meaning hope. Rooted in the words for thought and floating, it carries the poetic feeling of allowing our thoughts to rise rather than sink.
This is the spirit I wanted to capture in my painting—the delicate beauty of the white tern, its effortless grace, and the quiet reassurance that even when we cannot see the shore, there is always reason to hold on to hope.
