Mustangs Wild celebrates the extraordinary beauty and independent spirit of the wild horses roaming the high deserts of Nevada. Beneath sweeping Sierra Nevada mountains and magnificent cloud-filled skies, two mustangs stand among the sagebrush, embodying the strength, grace, and freedom of the American West.

Growing up in South Lake Tahoe, near the California and Nevada border, I was fortunate to experience two dramatically different landscapes — the beautiful alpine forests of the Sierra Nevada and the vast, rugged high deserts just beyond the mountains. I've always loved the wild mustangs that roam these desert valleys, living freely beneath those enormous Western skies.

The black stallion in this painting was inspired by a particularly spirited and protective horse from the Washoe Lake herd, while the beautiful paint mare was inspired by mustangs from the Virginia Range. Although they came from different herds, I brought them together in this watercolor to celebrate the beauty and character of these magnificent animals.

If you look closely, you'll discover a little secret in the painting. The white marking on the black stallion's forehead is shaped like the island of Kauaʻi! It's my personal way of connecting two places that hold special meaning in my life — my Sierra Nevada roots and my island home in Hawaiʻi.

Created in transparent watercolor, Mustangs Wild captures the rich earth tones of the high desert, the dramatic blue mountains, and the magnificent cloud formations that have always inspired my love of landscape painting. I wanted to honor not only the beauty of these horses, but also the freedom and wild spirit they represent.

To me, this painting is a reminder to stay true to your own nature, embrace adventure, and never lose that beautiful, independent spark within.
