Peace of the Tropics was born from one of those rare moments in nature that stays with you.

While snorkeling along Kaua‘i’s Nā Pali Coast on a beautiful, calm day, a honu appeared in the water and began swimming directly toward me. She came closer and closer, then paused and looked at me for several moments before quietly slipping back beneath the surface. I remember knowing almost immediately that I wanted to paint that encounter.

In Peace of the Tropics, the honu rises through luminous blue water beneath an expansive tropical sky and sculptural white clouds, suspended for a moment between the world above and the world below. There is a quietness in this piece that I love — that peaceful feeling of sharing the ocean with another living creature and simply being present for the moment.
