Peace of the Tropics
Canvas Giclée & Metal Fine Art Prints from an Original Oil Painting by Christie Marie Elder
A honu rises through luminous blue water, meeting the surface between an expansive tropical sky and the world below.
Peace of the Tropics was inspired by an unforgettable day along Kauaʻi’s Nā Pali Coast, when the ocean was unusually calm—almost glassy. From the boat, we watched spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, seabirds, and the coastline unfolding beside us before stopping to snorkel.
We had been reminded to give the honu plenty of space and allow them to move undisturbed. While I was snorkeling over the reef on my own, one turtle emerged from beneath the coral and began swimming directly toward me.
I backed away.
It kept coming.
I backed away again.
And it kept coming.
Eventually I stopped, wondering what exactly this very determined turtle intended to do.
The honu stopped too.
For a few moments, it looked directly at me before quietly slipping back beneath the water.
I still joke that perhaps the honu was flirting with me. Whatever brought it so close, the encounter felt personal enough that I knew almost immediately:
I was going to paint it.
Between Two Worlds
The composition places the honu directly at the boundary between air and sea.
Above is an immense tropical sky filled with sculptural clouds and a nearly glasslike horizon. Below, sunlight travels through clear blue water toward the reef.
And between the two is the turtle—surfacing to breathe.
That threshold has always fascinated me. Ocean animals inhabit an entire world beneath the surface that we only glimpse, and Peace of the Tropics became my way of preserving one of those rare moments when the two worlds meet.
CANVAS GICLÉE PRINT
Because the original Peace of the Tropics was painted in oil, canvas offers a beautiful connection to the character of the original artwork.
The textured surface gives the reproduction a traditional fine-art presence while allowing the deep ocean blues, soft clouds, reflected waterline, and subtle details of the honu to retain their painterly quality.
The full composition is preserved on the front of the print rather than sacrificing important areas of the artwork to fit a standard format.
Available sizes:
12" H × 15" W
16" H × 20" W
24" H × 30" W
Made to order.
METAL PRINT
For a more contemporary presentation, Peace of the Tropics is also available on aluminum.
Metal gives the luminous blues of the ocean and tropical sky an especially vivid presence, while the crisp surface beautifully carries the reflections, waterline, and detailed markings of the honu.
Each metal print includes an inset frame on the back with hanging wire and arrives ready to hang. The recessed mount allows the artwork to float slightly away from the wall for a clean, contemporary presentation.
Available sizes:
12" H × 15" W
16" H × 20" W
24" H × 30" W
Made to order.

Original Artwork: 24" H × 30" W

ABOUT COLOR & REPRODUCTION
I take care to reproduce the color and character of each original artwork as faithfully as possible.
Please keep in mind that every screen displays color somewhat differently, so the artwork you receive may vary slightly from what you see on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Because an original painting may contain texture, metallic pigments, gemstone watercolor, surface sheen, or other materials that interact physically with light, some qualities of an original simply cannot be duplicated in a reproduction.
When an artwork includes one of these special effects, I’ll note it in the individual artwork description.
CARE
Canvas Giclée: Dust gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth or feather duster. Avoid water, household cleaners, abrasive materials, and direct handling of the printed surface. For long-term preservation, display away from prolonged direct sunlight, excessive heat, and high humidity. Avoid pressing or leaning objects against the face of the canvas.
Metal: Dust gently with a clean microfiber or soft dry cloth. If deeper cleaning is needed, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth with warm water or a mild non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged direct sunlight whenever possible.
